The slash of color you see on this hillside is nature's response to a scar left on the landscape by men. In the early 20th century, loggers cleared a path called a "skid trail" to haul cut timber down Bierstadt Moraine on their way to Estes Park, where the Stanley Hotel was being built. The exposed soil proved fertile ground for aspen trees, which grew in a narrow strip amid the Douglas firs on the rest of the hillside. Eventually, the firs will overtake the aspens and the forest will be all green once more, but the process could take a century or more.
