Flattop Mountain Details

Although it is technically a mountain, the aptly named summit of 12,324-foot Flattop Mountain resembles a large alpine tundra more than the windswept pinnacle summits that the Rocky Mountains are known for. The ascending trail is challenging, and experiences a lot of quick elevation gains, steep climbs, and switchbacks as it leaves the treeline behind and opens up for spectacular views of some of the park's iconic landmarks. Look for elk, bighorn sheep, and pika along this popular trail, particularly in windy tundra areas. Views from the summit, which is completely exposed and can pose a danger to hikers unprepared for the sudden weather changes that often occur, provide even more astonishing views of the surrounding peaks, including Hallett, Otis, Taylor, and Longs Peaks, and the Mummy and Never Summer Ranges.
