Geologic Overlook Details
All of the geological formations of Mesa Verde National Park were mainly deposited millions of years ago when the middle of the continent was covered by the Western Interior Seaway. Over time, the sea would deposit layers of sand, later compacting and cementing into the Dakota Sandstone Formation. This is a great overlook on the main park road with wayside exhibits that teach you about the rich geological history of the park. A view of The Menefee Formation is best viewed from this overlook, which is the layer right above the Point Lookout Sandstone.
