Medano Creek Details
Medano Creek is a great place to cool off during the hot summer months, when you can enjoy a variety of activities in and around the cool water: wading, floating, swimming, skimboarding, and sand sculpting, to name a few. Snowfall from the surrounding mountains melts come spring, feeding the park's major aquatic playground, Medano Creek. April brings trickles of water down to the creek bed as it begins to deepen and widen. Late May is usually the peak of the creek's annual flow, creating water depths up to 18 inches. In very wet years, the creek makes a great place for young kids (or small adults) to float the creek using inflatable pool toys or boogie boards. The creek can get very crowded in late May and early June due to the warming weather and peak flow. Unless there is significant precipitation or the previous winter had a lot of snowfall, the creek typically begins to retreat in July and August, drying up by late summer in the area of the visitor center.
