Curecanti National Recreation Area Details
Salmon and trout fishing are among the most popular pursuits for visitors to the Curecanti National Recreation Area, which includes three reservoirs formed by dams on Colorado's Gunnison River. The 20-mile Blue Mesa Lake is the largest body of water in the state and is a rich Kokanee salmon fishery. Boating, naturally, is a big attraction as well, along with swimming, waterskiing, and windsurfing. Boating on the other two reservoirs, Morrow Point and Crystal, is limited to hand-carried boats like canoes and kayaks (other than park tour boats); Morrow Point is known for its fast current and deep canyons. Three park visitor centers offer information on ranger-led activities like a boat tour through upper Black Canyon. The 41,790-acre park also has 20 miles of hiking trails, including the two-mile Pine Creek Trail, which follows an old railbed.
