At this point, there is an interpretive sign which describes the western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis Hooker). These unusual trees prefer solitude and seek out desolate wind-swept granite slopes. John Muir would spend much of his time trying to determine the age of these unique trees. In fact, Western junipers can live more than 1,000 years, while giant sequoias can live more than 3,000 years. Roadside marker: T12
