Sentinel Dome (G8) Details
The dome was originally called "Sakkaduch," and was later renamed "South Dome," and for a third and final time was given its current moniker because of its resemblance to a watchtower. The dome is easy to climb, crossing small brooks and groves of Jeffrey and Ponderosa pines before steadily climbing over granite banks to the summit. The gnarled remnants of Ansel Adams' famous Jeffery pine are found on the south side of the peak, which coincidently offers the least exciting views. Otherwise, there are unbelievably spectacular and far-reaching panoramas from El Capitan, to Half Dome, to the far-off Mount Diablo. Roadside marker: G8
