Pioneer Yosemite History Center (W10) Details
Most people come to Yosemite for the natural scenery, but the area also has a rich history that you can learn about at this History Center. The bridge here was first built by Galen Clark, First Guardian of the Yosemite Grant and was later covered by the Washburn brothers from Vermont in 1879. It once served as the only southern access road to Yosemite Valley. The other structures here were moved from various locations around the Park and include George Anderson's cabin (he was the first person to climb Half Dome). Also look for an old blacksmith's shop, a bakery, a Wells Fargo office, a homestead cabin, and a collection of wagons and stagecoaches. The buildings are only open on special occasions once or twice a year. You can pick up self-guided brochures and use the interpretive signs to guide your walk around the property or take a ride in a historic horse-drawn stagecoach during the summer months.
