El Capitan (V8) Details
Early European explorers called this glacier-carved granite edifice "The Captain" for the way it dominates the Yosemite Valley. Look for dots of color on the sheer granite face of this 7,569-foot monument. Rock climbers come here from around the world to test their courage and skill against some of the most challenging routes on the planet. Incredibly, some even free-climb El Capitan - that's without ropes. A climb can take many days to complete. Your best views of El Capitan are from the roads in the western Yosemite Valley, including Tunnel View, the Bridalveil Falls area, and El Capitan Meadow. Roadside marker: V8
