Crane Flat (T1) Details
Though sandhill cranes once visited this area regularly, today, you're more apt to spy a great blue heron which are seen here on occasion. Sierra Nevada meadows - or flats - are rare. Many were the result of glaciers retreating and the resulting lakes being filled with silt and sand. Crane Flat, however, is located at 6,200 feet and is well beyond the reach of the glaciers. During the summer, the Crane Flat area is a busy hub since it serves as an intersection for the popular Tioga Road and visitors approaching from the Big Oak Flat Road. There is a gas station and a popular summer campground here should you need to fill up or decide you'd like to spend the night. Roadside marker: T1
