Devil's Kitchen Trail Details
Devil's Kitchen is Lassen's second-largest hydrothermal area. The 2.1-mile (one way) trail can be accessed from the Warner Valley trailhead. During the first .4 miles, you'll pass through a meadow and over a series of small footbridges. When you reach the first trail intersection, head right to continue towards Devil's Kitchen. You'll travel over a marshy, wet area (there are more footbridges here to prevent stepping in mud). Continue until the intersection for Dream Lake at .6 miles. Head right, and follow the trail into the meadow. The trail continues to Hot Springs Creek and climbs through the forest into the woodlands. Again, you'll reach an intersection; turn right for the last mile to Devil's Kitchen. Once you reach the hydrothermal area, a loop trail winds through a series of mud pots, steam vents, and boiling springs. Despite the rotten-egg smell, the area is quite pretty, with cracked yellow and red mounds of dirt stained by acid. Steam is constantly rising from the ground, lending an otherworldly feel to the area. The Warner Valley trailhead is most easily accessed from Chester. Follow the Feather River Road north one mile until you reach the fork for Juniper Lake and Warner Valley. Drive towards Warner Valley for 15 miles. Take the left onto a dirt road just past the Warner Valley Campground to reach the trailhead.
