Joshua Tree is filled with lots of monzogranite rock formations, such as the distinctive one at Split Rock, which is formed when molten lava, heated by the Earth's continuous movement, seeps upward and cools while still below the surface. Arid conditions and flash floods have, over time, exposed the boulders, which settled on top of each other. On the north end of Split Rock parking lot at the trailhead for Split Rock Trail is the eponymous rock, easily recognizable for the pronounced vertical split at its base. Rock climbing is popular here.
