The 186,673-acre Sheephole Valley Wilderness is a unit of the Bureau of Land Management on the northeast border of Joshua Tree National Park in Twentynine Palms, Calif., separated from the park by Highway 62. The wilderness area includes a broad swath of the Sheep Hole Valley as well as the Sheep Hole and Calumet mountains, and features dry lake beds, sand dunes, and the high desert environment typical of the Mojave Desert. Recreational activities include hiking, horseback riding, hunting, camping, and backpacking.
