Historic Dale Mining District Details
Prospectors and miners came to the area known as the Dale Mining District, 15 miles southeast of Twentynine Palms as early as 1881, lured by reports of gold in the Pinto Mountains. In its heyday, the district supported as many as 3,000 miners. Dale City sprang up around a well that was dug in 1884 and continued to grow in population until water began to be pumped to the mines in 1899. Once the water was readily available at the mines and the ore didn't need to be taken to Dale City to be milled, the town pulled up stakes and moved six miles south, to a town known as New Dale, closer to the two highest producing mines. When they closed down in 1917, New Dale was also abandoned. Anyone interested in a tour of the area can visit the [Twentynine Palms tourism site](http://visit29.org/ http://visit29.org/ ) for details on tours. The Old Dale Mining District is located outside of the borders of Joshua Tree National Park but can be reached from inside the park via Old Dale Road.
