There are six distinct mountain ranges within Joshua Tree National Park: The Little San Bernardino Mountains in the southwestern part; the Hexie, and Pinto Mountains in the center; the Cottonwood in the south; and the Eagle and Coxcomb Mountains in the eastern part. The Hexie Mountains lie within the higher northern Mojave Desert area of the park, and feature numerous washes and a mixture of low and high desert flora and fauna. The park's main north-south paved road, Pinto Basin Road, skirts the ranges' eastern side, and stops along the way include the Cholla Cactus Garden.
