Cottonwood Spring Nature Trail Details

The Cottonwood Spring Oasis, seven miles from the southern entrance to the park, was used for centuries by the Cahuilla Native Americans, who left artifacts such as bedrock mortars and clay pots in the area. The easy 1-mile roundtrip Cottonwood Spring Nature Trail follows a wash from the road near the spring, leading to a low ridge leading to the campground. There are interpretive educational signs along the trail, identifying desert fauna, and focusing on the Cahuilla peoples' use of the plants for food, medicine and household goods. The trailhead for this easy walk is in the Cottonwood Spring parking area.
