Big Morongo Canyon Preserve Details
The 31,000-acre preserve, operated by the Bureau of Land Management and supported by the Friends of Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, is a critical wildlife corridor inhabited by mountain lions, bighorn sheep, mule deer, and other animals. The preserve, sitting in the shadow of the San Bernardino Mountains, includes an oasis in Big Morongo Canyon and features six main hiking trails, including a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk. The preserve sits on the western border of Joshua Tree National Park between the park boundary and the town of Morongo Valley. Access is via East Drive, off Highway 62. It is one of the few riparian and marsh landscapes in the desert, making it a crucial habitat for many birds. Red-shouldered Hawks, Oak Titmice, Lawrence's Goldfinch, and Black-throated Sparrows are a few of the 220 birds that have been documented in the area. It is worth booking a guided nature walk or tour with one of the preserves volunteers to learn more about the natural habitats in the area.
