Ubehebe Crater Details
Known to local Native Americans as the "Coyote's Basket," Ubehebe Crater is a 600-foot-deep, half-mile-wide pit blasted from the earth by a volcanic steam explosion that occurred perhaps as recently as 300 years ago. Known as "maar volcanoes," Ubehebe and the other nearby craters (like Little Hebe) in the park occur when magma hits underground water and heats it into steam; the resulting pressure triggers an explosion. The landscape around the craters is dotted with cinders and cinder cones from the explosion. Visitors can see Ubehebe Crater by driving to the rim-side parking lot, but a hike around the rim will give you a better look at the many features that resulted from the violent event that created the crater. Note that while it is possible to hike down into the crater, the climb back out can be difficult.
