Founded as a way-station for miners in the early 20th century, Stovepipe Wells shifted to serving Death Valley tourists as a tent encampment gave way to hotels and shops. Located in the northern part of Death Valley National Park on Highway 190, Stovepipe Wells is best known today for Stovepipe Wells Village, a lodging/dining/entertainment complex that includes the Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel, the Badwater Saloon, the Nugget Gift Shop, the Toll Road Restaurant and a General Store. Gas is also available here, as are restrooms. Stovepipe Wells Village also has a concessionaire-operated RV park and campground; the U.S. Parks Service operates the 190-site Stovepipe Wells Campground nearby. If you were wondering, the community was named for an actual well; it can still be seen nearby.
