Saratoga Springs Details
The Saratoga Springs pupfish is the most famous (and endangered) resident of this spring-fed marshland, a desert oasis in the southern end of Death Valley National Park. Named for the horse-racing town in upstate New York, Saratoga Spring was an important water source in the valley, especially when 20-mule-teams hauled borax in the 1880s. The springs are a reminder that despite its arid surface, Death Valley actually sits over a massive underground aquifer, up to 40,000 square miles in size. Located at the foot of the Ibex Hills, the 6.6-acre springs are closed to visitors to preserve the fragile ecosystem, but visitors can drive and hike close enough to get a good look at this rare wet spot in the desert.
