Salsbury Pass Details
Salsbury Pass, at 3,315 feet, is the highest point along Badwater Road, also known as Highway 178. It lies west of the town of Shoshone, California, and east of the lower Jubilee Pass at 1,290 feet. From the crest, the road begins its descent toward the stark basin of Death Valley. Nearby Salsbury Peak and the pass itself are named for Jack Salsberry, a colorful and controversial mining promoter associated with boomtown ventures such as Leadfield, Greenwater, and Ubehebe. Today, the pass offers sweeping desert views and marks a dramatic transition between high desert terrain and the depths of Death Valley National Park.
