Rhyolite Ghost Town Details

Rhyolite is one of the best-preserved and most interesting ghost towns in the American West. Founded in 1905 during the Death Valley gold rush, Rhyolite was a substantial town in its heyday, with a population of up to 5,000 people and infrastructure that included an opera house, a stock exchange, train station, school and hospital. When the Bullfrog Mining District failed, however, so did the town; by 1920, the population of Rhyolite had all but vanished, and the town's abandoned structures were pillaged for building materials and whatever other valuables were left. Hollywood put Rhyolite back on the map in when the town was used as a shooting location for several films. Today, visitors to the ghost town can see the largely intact train station, the "bottle house" (made of glass bottles), a former railroad caboose converted into a gas station, and the shell of an old bank building, among other remains. Rhyolite is located just outside the eastern boundary of Death Valley National Park and close to the town of Beatty. It is easily reached via a side road off Highway 374 (Daylight Pass Road) and is about 35 miles from the Furnace Creek Visitor Center.
