Panamint Valley Details

With its north end in Death Valley National Park and its south end containing the China Lake naval air base, the Panamint Valley is a secluded place occasionally riven by the roar of low-flying jets. Sixty-five miles long and up to 10 miles wide, the valley is home to the Ballarat ghost town, the Panamint Dunes, and the infamous Barker Ranch (the one-time hideout of the Manson Family). The valley is crossed by four-wheel-drive tracks that access seldom-visited canyons like Golor and Pleasant Canyon, as well as old mine and mill sites. Darwin Falls, a startlingly lush cascade amid the desert environment, also is located here, as is the nearby Panamint Springs Resort.
