Panamint Dunes Details

Death Valley National Park has five sets of major sand dunes; this is one of the less-accessible. The Panamint Dunes are unusual in that they sit on a slope rather than on a valley floor, so visitors who climb to the top will enjoy an especially impressive view. However, reaching the Panamint Dunes entails a five-mile drive down an unmarked dirt road (Lake Hill Road, about 4.4 miles from Panamint Springs on Highway 190), followed by a three-mile hike. The good news is that you'll likely have these remote, star-shaped dunes in the northern end of the Panamint Valley more or less to yourself if you make the trip.
