Mormon Point Details
The modest Mormon Point overlook sits about 290 feet above sea level, so it's a few hundred feet more than that to the floor of Death Valley. It's located in the south end of Death Valley National Park on Highway 178, about 12 miles north of the Ashford Mill ruins. This promontory in the Black Mountains -- a so-called "turtleback" formation created by undulations along exposed surfaces of moderately eroded fault escarpments -- was named after early Mormon explorers of the region.
