Keane Wonder Mine Details

In some ways, the Keane Wonder Mine really was wonderful: it was one of the most successful gold mines in Death Valley; more than $1 million in gold was extracted here during the first decades of the 20th century. The mining operation was extensive and included a stamp mill, dorms, and an aerial tramway used to move ore. On the other hand, the owners left a legacy of toxic waste and used mining techniques that left not just the mine but the mountain above it dangerously unstable. Between that and the deteriorating condition of the mine's historic structures, the Park Service has closed the Keane Wonder Mine area to visitors. The closed area is from the junction of Keane Wonder Road and Beatty Cut-off Road east to Chloride City, and approximately one mile both north and south of Keane Wonder Mine, including Keane Wonder Mill, Cyty Mill, Big Bell, and King Midas Mines.
