Johnson Canyon Road Details

Johnson Canyon Road branches off West Side Road in Death Valley and climbs gradually into the quiet, rugged landscape of Johnson Canyon, ending near Wilson Spring. This 10 mile unpaved route begins approximately 21.9 miles from the park north entrance along West Side Road and travels through remote desert terrain with expansive views and little traffic. A high clearance four wheel drive vehicle is required to navigate the rough surface. Near the end of the road, visitors can park and hike about two miles to the remains of Hungry Bills Ranch, a historic backcountry homestead that offers a glimpse into the hardy lives of early desert settlers. Road conditions can vary and are subject to change.
