Hungry Bill's Ranch Details

"Hungry Bill" sounds like a cowboy name, but in fact Hungry Bill was a Shoshone Indian who lived with his family on his ranch near Furnace Creek until his death in 1918. In fact, the Johnson Canyon ranch served as a gathering place for the Native American inhabitants of the Death Valley region -- some of whom were involved in mining and prospecting -- well into the 20th century. Death Valley National Park visitors can reach the site of Hungry Bill's Ranch -- not much more than some stone walls and a few wooden fences at this point -- via the 3.6-mile Hungry Bill's Ranch/Johnson Canyon Trail.
