Father Crowley Vista Details
Father Crowley Vista is a scenic overlook with views of Rainbow Canyon and a volcanic landscape. Look for the dark lava flows and cinder cones that dot the landscape, then follow the dirt road east of the parking lot for a great view of the Panamint Mountains. Father John J. Crowley, born in Ireland and educated at Holy Cross, was known as the "Padre of the Desert." He drove his battered Ford endlessly around his 30,000-square-mile parish until his death in a car crash in 1940, ministering to the residents of Death Valley and eastern California regardless of their faith. A plaque at the overlook stands in his honor.
