Wassama Round House State Historic Park Details
For thousands of years, Sierra Miwok tribes resided in this area before being displaced by European settlers, miners, and loggers. This park preserves a roundhouse used by the tribes, which was used for ceremonial dances and hand games. The roundhouse that stands here today is from 1903, as previous structures are usually burned once the reigning chief of the village dies. However, the last chief requested that the roundhouse would remain even after his death, although it unfortunately collapsed on its own in the mid-1970s. The one that stands in the park is a faithful reconstruction that is still used by surviving Miwok people.
