Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park Details
Situated in a small valley in the Sierra Nevada foothills, this park is famous for its marbleized limestone rocks and bedrock mortars. In fact, this is the largest collection of mortar holes in North America. The highlight of this 135-acre park is the Chawse Regional Indian Museum, which houses many different artifacts as well as a reconstructed Miwok Village. Miwok tribes lived in this area for centuries, although the population has greatly dwindled since the 17th-century. It is also worth taking one of the two trails that stem from the village to experience nature the way that the Miwoks did hundreds of years ago.
