Overview Details
Located west and east of Tucson, Ariz., the two units of Saguaro National Park protect deserts inhabited by 1.6 million saguaro cactuses, the iconic multi-limbed giants of the Southwest. Saguaros are outsized in every way: they live up to 200 years, grow as high as 50 feet tall, and store hundreds of gallons of water. Spring is perhaps the best time to visit the park, when the rains cause desert wildflowers to bloom. The Rincon Mountain District to the east of Tucson includes an 8-mile Cactus Forest Drive and a variety of picnic areas and trails, including the Cactus Forest Trail that can be used by mountain bikers. The western Tucson Mountain District has an awe inspiring desert mountain scape and includes the striking Red Hills, a 5-mile loop road, and a short trail leading to a large collection of petroglyphs. A four-mile hike leads to the top of Wasson Peak, highest peak in the park, known for its great views. Date Formed: October 14, 1994 Area: 91,439.71 acres Website: [www.nps.gov/sagu](http://www.nps.gov/sagu)
