Puerco Pueblo Trail Details
Visitors to the Puerco Pueblo archaeological site must visit via the 0.3-mile, wheelchair accessible Puerco Pueblo trail. The trailhead for the paved trail is in the Puerco Pueblo parking area, and visits the archeological remains of the 100-room pueblo, which served as a primary residence for up to 200 people during the 1300s. The partially excavated village, built around a large internal plaza, is thought to have been occupied by around 18 families at its peak, but it was abandoned by 1380 due to a shifting climate, inhospitable to growing crops. The south end of the trail also features a glimpse at some of the park's petroglyphs, with animals and hunting scenes etched into nearby rocks. There is a parking lot and accessible restrooms at the trailhead just off Petrified Forest Road. The former checking station has been converted into an interactive museum exhibit that is accessible on the trail.
