Newspaper Rock Details
Newspaper Rock, in the southern portion of the park near Puerco Pueblo, the Teepees and Blue Mesa, features more than 650 petroglyphs adorning its boulders, which have come to rest below the cliffs. Because of defacement to the petroglyphs, however, the area is closed below the cliff. Free spotting scopes are available at the viewpoint including an interpretive display about the petroglyphs. High concentrations of petroglyphs like the one at Newspaper Rock are quite significant, in that many generations of Native American residents have contributed to the art. The petroglyphs were created by ancestral Puebloan people, who lived, farmed and hunted along the Puerco River between 650 and 2,000 years ago. Some of the ancient artists may have lived at Puerco Pueblo, which is located less than one mile north of Newspaper Rock.
