Mather Memorial Details
At the end of a short side trail off the Giant Logs Trail is a memorial to Stephen Mather, an industrialist and conservationist who became the first director of the National Park Service in 1917. Similar monuments have been laid at other national parks, from Acadia to Zion. Like the others, the one at Petrified Forest reads: "He laid the foundation of the National Park Service, defining and establishing the policies under which its areas shall be developed and conserved unimpaired for future generations. There will never come an end to the good that he has done." The Mather Memorial at Petrified Forest is the only memorial to be personally dedicated by National Park Service Director Horace Albright.
