Jasper Forest Details
In the southern portion of the park, about 10 miles north of the south entrance station and along the park's main road is Jasper Forest. This area showcases one of the park's largest accumulations of petrified wood. As the cliffsides eroded in this area, logs tumbled into the valley below. The area was originally named First Forest, because it was the first area of petrified wood that visitors came upon when they came by wagon from the Adamana train station 100 years ago. Today's visitors can pull into the Jasper Forest parking lot for a better look, or take a 2.5-mile roundtrip hike down into the area on a historic road.
