Originally serving as a thoroughfare for the The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the train tracks running through Petrified Forest National Park now serve the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Interstate 40, as well as the Puerco River and Historic Route 66, all run roughly parallel to the tracks. AT&SF ran passenger trains to California on these tracks until 1971, when Amtrak took over the route. Today, Amtrak's Southwest Chief passes through the park. Parking and viewing is recommended only from the Puerco Pueblo parking area.
