Adamana Ghost Town Details

**The modern-day ghost town features three structures and two inhabitants, but as it's private property, visitors are not welcome without permission.** The village of Adamana, about four miles south of I-40 and west of the park's southern unit, was established in 1890 by the Santa Fe Railroad Company as a way station where trains could take on water and passengers could eat. Early tours of the area also began here. It's thought that the town was named after one of the early residents, Adam Hanna, who ran a hotel in the town. John Muir lived in the town briefly from 1905 to 1906 while he explored the petrified forest, and the town was also the base for paleontologist Charles Camp in 1921 and 1923. The arrival of a bridge over the Puerco River and the decline in railroad travel after Route 66 was completed led to the town's decline until finally a fire in the 1970s destroyed the Forest Hotel, spelling the end of Adamana.
