New Hance Trail Details
Also known as the Red Canyon Trail, this challenging trail was built by John Hance, a prospector who, after being unsuccessful in mining asbestos and copper, turned to tourism and led groups into the canyon via this trail. Due to the trail's age and a lack of regular maintenance, the Hance trail requires experience and sure footing to manage some of the steep descents, rock falls, and scree that become progressively more common as you near the river. Although the views from the trail are fairly mediocre by Grand Canyon standards, the floor of Red Canyon is truly spectacular, offers a sampling of Arizona's wildlife, and is a great camping area. The river is the only water source on this trail.
