Mule Barn Details
Mule rides into the Grand Canyon predate the founding of the park itself, and these surprisingly nimble beasts of burden have a remarkable record of safely carrying visitors up and down the canyon's terrifyingly narrow and twisting trails. You can see the mules at the historic Mule Barn near Bright Angel Lodge, which is also where mule rides along the canyon rim and into the abyss itself begin. You can visit the barn anytime of day, or stop by between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. or between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. if you want to see the mules, wranglers, and passengers departing or returning from their journey into the canyon. The rim rides are usually available on short notice, but the overnight trips to Phantom Ranch within the canyon need to be booked well in advance unless you want to take a chance of snaring a spot on the waiting list due to cancellations.
