Hermits Rest Details
Hermits Rest marks the westernmost limit of the developed part of Grand Canyon National Park. Here you'll find one of park architect Mary Colter's true masterpieces, a rough-hewn building that has provided comfort to visitors for nearly 100 years. Named in honor of early Grand Canyon settler Louis Boucher, Hermit's Rest was built to look like a hand-raised settler's stone cabin. Visitors once entered through a stone arch with an old mission bell suspended underneath, but the path has been moved to protect the structure from vandals. The modest facade belies a magnificent interior with a huge fireplace. You can browse through the curio shop here, get a bite to eat at the snack bar, or check out the small observation patio for views of the Supai and Redwall foundations and the Hermit Rapids on the Colorado River. The South Rim Trail ends at Hermits Rest, but the Hermit Trail begins here. This rough trail was originally built by horse thieves and leads down to the former Hermit Camp.
