Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery Details
A stone gateway in typical "parkitecture" style leads to the Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery, the final resting place for a variety of park founders and figures that's still in use today. Look for the grave markers of historical figures like John Hance, Ralph Cameron, Pete Berry, Ellsworth Kolb, Gunnar Widforss, the Verkamp family, and Eddie McKee, who rest peacefully alongside the remains of war veterans, tribal members, and employees of the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. You'll also find a memorial to the victims of a 1956 midair collision of two passenger airliners over the canyon; the unidentified remains of 29 passengers are buried here, as well. It is located just west of the Shrine of Ages.
