Mount Wrangell Details
Mount Wrangell, a partially namesake for the park and iconic peak, is visible from much of the park. This peak, actually a shield volcano, is covered by ice year-round. Unlike some prominent peaks, Wrangell is extremely wide, characteristic of shield volcanoes. The peak was named after Russian Admiral Ferdinand von Wrangell, governor of Russian America in the 1830s. The Ahtna people have a different name for it, Uk'eledi, meaning "the one with smoke on it." Mt. Wrangell is the only volcano in the range to have recorded eruptions with its last activity in 1890 being only a "visible glow." Although the peak may not be prominent, it is twice the height of Mt. Shasta in California. The mountain makes a remarkable scene at sunrise and sunset so it is certainly worthwhile to plan your day around a time to view this incredible event.
