Copper River Float Details

This float itinerary is an easy to moderate trip offering variable rapids over four to six days. This itinerary typically takes 15-30+ hours of paddling, so your total time will depend on your fitness, water conditions, and personal preference. This itinerary has an easy put-in and pull-out (no air taxi required) making it an easier trip logistically. This route is approximately 85 miles long, many visitors hire a guide familiar with the river to make the trip, although it is possible to paddle it independently. Knowledge of Alaskan rivers is crucial as the braiding of the rivers during glacial melt makes navigating difficult. A detailed itinerary for suggested day-by-day routes is available at the park's visitor centers. There are ten different camping options along the route, though visitors should take bear precautions as there is a risk in this region of coming into contact. Paddlers will need to look for clear water tributaries and treat water throughout the trip. The water is extremely cold so visitors should prepare for the risk of hypothermia, keep all items in dry bags and dress warmly. Visitors should bring PFDs, waterproof matches, a helmet, warm clothes, and remember to always tie down boats when taking breaks in case water levels change quickly.
