Caribou Creek Trail Details

This moderately easy out-and-back trail provides fantastic views, wildflowers, and a good chance at spotting some Alaskan wildlife. Begin at the marked trailhead at Mile 19.5 on the north side of Nabesna Road. Parking is located at Mile 18.9 on the north side of the road. The trail follows an ATV route, making the hiking fairly easy, but creating the potential for very muddy areas. Hike through the bottom of the valley with open views of the surrounding area. The forest will begin to close in on you and you'll continue through mixed spruce-alder-willow forests with an understory of wildflowers. There are 4-5 creek crossings on the route. None are typically hazardous but use caution and judge whether the conditions are appropriate to continue. The trail will take you to the Caribou Creek Cabin, a public use cabin nestled below the ridgelines. For details about the cabin, please see the section on Caribou Creek Cabin.
