Telaquana Trail Route Details
The Telaquana Trail Route is a popular one-way, trail-less backpacking route that follows in the footsteps of the Dena'ina Athabascan people, original settlers in the area, from Telaquana Lake to Kijik Village on Lake Clark. The route was also used by miners, trappers, and explorers throughout the 1800s and into the early 1900s; it has been designated both an historic district and a cultural landscape. Start your hike from Telaquana Lake and climb into alpine country; the climb may take you two to five hours. Above the tree line, camping sites and drinking water are abundant, and you may decide to stay awhile. Once you're ready to hike again, cross the Mulchatna River upstream of the first major tributary (about 1.5 miles downstream of Turquoise Lake). Follow the tributary to higher country before descending into the Chilikadrotna River basin. Be sure and use caution when crossing the Mulchatna River; waters can be waist-deep in mid-summer. To access the Telaquana Trail Route, you will need to fly into Telaquana Lake or Lower Twin Lake.
