Onion Portage Details
Onion Portage is one of the park's central features and reasons for establishment. Located on the eastern end of the park boundaries, Onion Portage is one of the easiest locations to cross the Kobuk River which led the thousands of caribou and subsequent hunters to congregate at this location of the present day park. The wide riverbed conditions allowed an abundance of wild onions to grow here, and alongside the prime hunting conditions, made for a hospitable location for early settlers. Archaeological excavations have uncovered evidence of human settlement in this area for at least 10,000 years spanning at least nine unique cultural groups. Professor J. Lewis Giddings, one of the earliest scientists in the park and major contributor to the park's history, did extensive studies of the area up until his death in 1964. There is still evidence today of the excavations done in the park, visitors should be cautious when treading in this area of the park. Onion Portage also hosts a seasonal ranger post. The post is staffed based on weather, but at the widest window can be from May through September. Check with park staff at the park headquarters to verify the current staffing schedule: (907) 442-3890.
