Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station Details
Located outside the park in Talkeetna, Alaska, and named for the first man to summit Mt. McKinley, this ranger station is where mountaineering activities within the park are organized, including climbs of Mt. McKinley. Mountaineers get their climbing permits here as well as an orientation to the mountains of the Alaska Range. Denali visitors can also stop here on their way to the park to get information, visit the bookstore, and perhaps catch an interpretive program in the summer. Talkeetna is about 100 miles south of the Denali park entrance. The ranger station is on B Street downtown. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, Mid-April to Labor Day, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, the rest of the year.
