Talkeetna Details

Established as a hub for the Alaska Railroad, the town of Talkeetna, Alaska, sits at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna rivers. The town's historic downtown features landmarks like Nagley's General Store, the Fairview Inn, and the Talkeetna Roadhouse, and also is home to the Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station, where all mountaineering activities in Denali National Park -- including attempts to summit Mt. McKinley -- are organized. Despite that association with Denali, Talkeetna is actually pretty distant from the park -- 125 miles south, or three hours drive on the Parks Highway. A big tourist destination, the town is a great place to join a flightseeing, fishing, or float trip, ATV or snowmachine tour, or just stroll the local shops and galleries, get some food and drink a local beer or two before continuing on to Denali.
