Day hikers and campers can quickly get out of sight of the park road by hopping off the shuttle bus between Highway Pass and Thorofare Pass to explore the Stony Dome area. If you're new to off-trail hiking this is a nice place to start, since the terrain is pretty gentle and there are no rivers to cross. The Stony Dome summit and Gravel Mountain are popular day hike destinations here, although the latter -- a 6,000-foot peak -- can be challenging. If you want to see grizzly bears, hiking here will provide one of your best opportunities.
